Why support the community college nursing programs?
According to 2018 National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses (NSSRN), there are only 9.25 nurses for every 1000 people in the state of California (Nurse Journal, Dec. 1, 2020: "The US Shortage: A State by State Breakdown"). Nursing is ranked as the third most in-demand career in the US in 2019 (Nurse Journal, Dec. 1, 2020).
The nursing profession continues to attract many people who want to seek a career to “serve others.” However, there is a continuing nursing shortage. Based on 2018 NSSRN's report, the average age of an RN was 50 years of age, making the nursing shortage even more of a social and healthcare issue (American Association of Colleges of Nursing Fact Sheet, September 2020).
There are some nursing students who can afford a four-year college education. Most, however, cannot afford the costs and length of time to pursue a four-year degree (BSN). Community colleges with the ADN (Associate Degree of Nursing) programs offer the best option, with less tuition cost, less time, and the nursing students can enter the workforce to begin their nursing career sooner. After entering the workforce, nurses with the ADN degree often pursue their BSN degree, while working.
